Most homes are burdened by high levels of EMF radiation from internal wiring, external power supply, phone towers and wireless technology in or near the home. It is possible to build a home with the aim to reduce this exposure and create a healthier home.

Why build a home EMF-free?

There is a vast amount of research that indicates that exposure to low-level non-ionising radiation (EMF or Electronic Pollution) is harmful to us. Thousands of studies have been done looking at particular areas of health or the body and the majority indicate that we have a problem. Governments tend to base their maximum exposure standards on very old research that looked at thermal effects only. Meaning that they figured that as long as your tissue was not being raised in temperature (cooked) there was no problem.

This is of course very ignorant as many biological processes will be effected before the point where you’re being cooked. Studies also showed that less EMF radiation doesn’t always mean less effects. Sometimes by lowering the exposure you get more symptoms. It is therefor important we lower exposure far more to levels where the body is not effected.

Building EMF-free is especially important in the sleeping areas. The human body rests and regenerates (repairs) during sleep. The bedroom is often a space of high exposure to EMF because of sleeping near the wall (which has electrical wiring in it) and the presence of bed-side lamps, clock radios and other electrical cabling like extension cords and phone chargers. The mattress you have may also detract from your sleep quality regardless of how good it feels to lay on and the removal of plugged in devices and lamps often still leaves you with high electric field exposure from the wiring and exposure to phone tower radiation.

It is wonderful to build an entire home without EMF radiation but the priority is the bedrooms. At the very minimum, the bedrooms should be build EMF-free.

What are common EMF radiation sources in a home?

As mentioned, the electrical items in a bedroom expose us to EMF during sleep and so does the wiring in the wall. There are sadly a lot more sources we should be concerned about. We’ll go into these in separate articles but here is an overview.

• Electrical wiring is the most common source of EMF radiation in a new home as the more modern home is more wired for convenience.
• Power supply to the home and the location of the meter box and circuit breaker panels should be carefully planned for.
• Solar power panels and the inverter can be great source of EMF radiation and the decision to place solar power on your home should not be an automatic one. What is great for the environment as a whole may not be good for your ‘electrical’ body.
• Local distributions lines (power lines) in the street and produce large magnetic fields that can reach well into a property. This can vary depending on the time of day and over the years to come as power consumption increases in your area.
• Wireless technology in your home and that of your neighbours. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, amateur radio are just some examples of radio frequency radiation sources that can pollute your own home or can enter yours from those around you.
• Phone towers and their ever-increasing output of radio frequency radiation can enter your home and your body from great distances.

When building an EMF-free home, all these factors need to be taken in account. The presence of magnetic fields from outside sources (and inside a home in case of an old home you’re looking at removing) should be measured before you commit to buying land to build on.

How to avoid EMF radiation when building a house?

You can learn about sources of EMF radiation and aim to avoid them. This is especially important for magnetic fields from power lines nearby because their magnetic field radiation cannot really be shielded against. If you have enough space on the land, you could move where you are building the home to avoid these magnetic fields. We’ve made this recommendation to quite a few of our clients after an on-site assessment.

When it comes to the construction of the home you need a lot more experience to analyse your proposed building plans. This is where our services come in. There are many EMF consultants, and many will claim to offer EMF-free building consulting services, but they have no or very little successful experience to fall back on. During the early stages your plans need to be looked at and the EMF exposure that can be anticipated needs to be discussed. Often there will be various EMF avoidance or shielding approaches to choose from. Extensive experience of EMF-free building is needed to identify problems in the plans, possible approaches to avoid or shield and to guide the implementation process when it comes to executing the EMF-free building approach.

What materials can block EMF?

There are some normal building materials can aid your efforts to reduce your exposure to EMF radiation from things like phone towers. There are however specially designed shielding materials that offer much greater predictability to their success and be much more flexible in their use and application. Important is that they are carefully crafted for health (not just shielding) if they are used anywhere inside the home, especially the bedrooms. This health factor of shielding, often overlooked by shielding manufacturers.

Metal wall cladding and metal roofs are examples of such materials. Care must be taken though, because only the use of these materials may not guarantee a good or good enough end result. In some situations, it could also make things worse as ‘blocking EMF’ more often means ‘deflecting EMF’. This means you could deflect EMF to other parts of the home if you’re not careful.

During the consulting process, different types of glass will also be discussed which have different reactions to RF radiation. Another unexpected option might be the active use of some plants as a measure against electric fields from outside.

• Assess the land you are considering purchasing for magnetic fields and know what levels you want to avoid for your family. (find tips on this here)
• Have a discussion with your EMF-free building experienced consultant about your findings and ideas for home design as early as possible.
• It is recommended that an on-site assessment of your building site is done by the consultant who can verify your findings and check other radiation type exposure factors with more professional equipment. • Develop general building design (plans)

• As your build gets underway, you consult with your EMF consultant whenever needed and order your needed materials in time.
• If desired, your EMF consultant can be on-site when shielding materials are first being implemented so that they can brief, guide and even assist the builder, electrician or painters as they start implementing the solutions for your EMF-free building.

Once the home is completed you can request your consultant to come back and verify the success of the EMF-free building project and show you the low levels in your home.

It is so important for families to check the magnetic field radiation on a land they consider buying BEFORE they sign any contract. There is nothing more sad than to find out that the land you just bought has an unfixable and serious radiation problem.

It is hard to give a price indication as each home is different in size and you can vary greatly the extend of your approach. It may however be a very small percentage of your entire building project and arguably one of the most important features of your home. Your roof or a pool would would likely cost more than your EMF-free building additions.
